Tips on How to Prepare for Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure to replace missing bone. It is prevalent in dentistry because teeth must attach to bone. If you do not have bone in the places it needs to be, you cannot have teeth. So, bone grafting in the jaw is a common practice in dentistry because of this. The process of bone grafting requires a delicate procedure that with the proper preparation will give it the best chance at being successful. Here are some tips to follow if you have an upcoming bone grafting appointment:
- Tell Your Dentist About All Medications Being Taken: The medications that you take can have bad interactions with the medications that the dental surgeon is going to use during or after your procedure. It is important to give them a list of all the medications that you are taking so that can properly plan for your bone graft surgery.
- Existing Dental Crowns & Bridges May Need Adjustment: You may need your dental crowns or bridges adjusted before surgery to prevent damage to them. Consult your dentist to determine if this is necessary.
- Prepare for Your Appointment: There is much to do to prepare for surgery day. Begin by preparing transportation to and from your surgery. You will also need to find a friend or family member to monitor you during the 24 hours following the procedure to check for complications. Make sure you fill all your prescriptions before your appointment. Lastly, be sure to schedule a few days off work. You will need a few days to recuperate.
- Reschedule if Needed: Be sure to reschedule your surgery if needed. For example, if you are sick, you should reschedule. When you are sick, your immune system is weakened and not able to sufficiently heal.
